The Sky Sport Breakers will soon take advantage of the trans-Tasman bubble and return home to New Zealand on May 16 after more than five months on the road.
Game one of seven to be held in New Zealand over the next five weeks will be at Trusts Arena in Auckland, with a share of remaining games to be held across Auckland and the regions, underlining the clubs commitment to growing basketball across the whole of New Zealand.
When they suit up for the May 20 clash against the Sydney Kings at Trusts Arena, it will be almost 500 days since they played their last home game in Auckland.
Home advantage played a significant part in a memorable 113-89 win over the Adelaide 36ers pre-COVID on January 30 2020, and it is that support from the fans the team are looking forward to.
“It has been a long and somewhat lonely five months for everyone involved” says Breakers Chief Operating Officer, Lisa Edser.
“To have the team confirmed as coming home and playing in front of fans, members, sponsors, friends and family is really exciting. What we used to take for granted is actually very special these days, so we hope Breaker Nation will come out in force to show their support for the boys and enjoy some fantastic entertainment.”
For one player in particular, the wait for an Auckland game has been even longer than the fans.
The last time Tai Webster played in Auckland was 2013 and crowd size, volume and atmosphere has increased considerably in his eight years away.
“I haven’t played in Auckland for the Breakers for a very long time,” says Breakers star Tai Webster.
“It was when I was a development player but everyone tells me about the great energy and the fans all getting out behind the team. I’m extremely excited to get back out there and put on a show for the fans.”
Confirmed schedule so far:
- Thursday 20 May, vs. Sydney Kings - The Trusts Arena
- Sunday 30 May, vs. Brisbane Bullets - Spark Arena
- Saturday 5 June, vs. Cairns Taipans - The Trusts Arena
We expect a further regional schedule announcement within the week.
Tickets go on sale to the public 9am, Thursday for the three Auckland games, you can purchase these via Ticketmaster.
