Two and two on the floor to start their campaign, the BNZ Breakers are managing injury setbacks to guard Preston Le Gassick and Wing Josiah-Jordan James. Neither have not taken the floor so far in NBL27, with Le Gassick rehabbing a neck injury and James a hamstring.
BNZ Breakers President of Basketball Dillon Boucher says both are in great hands with the club medical and performance staff.
“Our priority is two outstanding young men and their well being. Preston and Josiah know that the only voices they are listening to are those immediately around them as we work with them to see them back healthy and playing basketball again.
“We have been hugely impressed by both players for their on and off court presence and our medical team continue to work towards having them return to play as soon as is safely possible.”
“The nature of the injuries mean that the timeline is not clear cut, injuries rarely do present in such a way, but our medical and performance team are world class and will continue to work closely with both players throughout their rehabilitation.”
Boucher says each situation will be treated on its merits, whether a local (Australian or Kiwi) or an import.
“As a club we are always monitoring performance and losing one of our imports for these opening rounds certainly has a detrimental effect, Triple J (Josiah-Jordan James) showed in the pre-season what he will bring to this team at both ends of the floor.
“But by the same token we are not going to make rash decisions and the team is focused on a next-man up philosophy. We have been fortunate to bring in a player the quality of Mo King right now as injury cover and will continue to monitor the import market and the progress of Triple J on the advice of our medical and performance team.
“Whatever the final outcome, our focus is on Preston and Josiah-Jordan as people first, providing them with the support and medical guidance they need to rehabilitate and return to playing the game we all love, while also balancing the needs of the team on the floor.”
Boucher says both have big contributions to make to the club, with 22-year-old Tall Black candidate LeGassick someone the club has a long-term plan for.
“We love both these guys for what they bring on and off the floor, Preston is a young local we see as along term NBL player, he is on a 1+1 contract and has a great futureahead of him.
“And Triple J is without questionone of the finest characters that has pulled on a BNZ Breakers singlet, he is rehabbing himself back to full fitness.”
James will be assessed at the four-to-six-week mark of his hamstring rehabilitation (he is three weeks post-injury), while Le Gassick is managing a nerve impingement injury in his neck and shoulder, with his return to play timeline not yet certain.
Meanwhile the team is fully focused on their road game against Adelaide on Sunday evening (tip off 7pm NZT Sunday 4th October). The game is the first of five consecutive road games before the team is next seen at home at Spark Arena on October 30 when they also play the 36ers.
