The Boyhood Dream Continues for Alex McNaught
The player who was a Sky Sport Breakers’ season ticket holder just a couple of seasons ago has received a three-year extension to his Development Player Contract.
It is just reward for Alex McNaught, who played 12 games for the Breakers this season, including getting minutes in two playoff encounters against the Tasmanian JackJumpers.
However, his most significant contribution to the club was in just the third game of the hugely successful season when he played 13 minutes against the Phoenix and helped secure the Breakers their first win in Melbourne for four years.
It came at a time when Tom Abercrombie and Will McDowell-White were injured, with coach Mody Maor later declaring that the team could not have won the game without McNaught.
It was the first away win for the Breakers in a historic season where they went an astonishing 11-3 on the road in NBL23.
“My goal with this new contract extension is to try and cement my place in the team and make consistent minutes,” says McNaught.
“With Mody showing his trust by offering me this extension, I know I will make leaps and bounds in the future.”
McNaught’s immediate future is with the Nelson Giants in the New Zealand NBL.
It will be his fourth season with the club, and the 20-year-old hopes to take what he has learned at the Breakers onto the hardwoods across New Zealand.
“After my year with the Breakers, my confidence and overall offensive savviness have picked up a lot,” he says.
“I’m going to be coming into the NZNBL with a lot more offensive mindset and confidence.”
Maor is looking forward to watching his progress.
“He’s a kid who plays with intensity and effort, toughness and grit,” says Maor.
“There’s still a lot of areas which we want Alex to improve in during the New Zealand NBL, and I know he will put in the effort to the point where he will become an even better player next season.”
