The star of the recent Silver Ferns test series win over England and a member of New Zealand’s hottest band headline the latest names confirmed for the Manuka Doctor All Star Celeb Slam basketball event at Spark Arena on November 26.
Sharpshooter Maia Wilson, with a better than 90 percent shooting average against the English, Six60 bass guitarist Chris Mac, social media star Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck, Chart-topping artist Nouri and comedian Guy Williams are the latest names confirmed today.
They join Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Irene van Dyk, Chloe Swarbrick, Carlos Spencer, Jenny-May Clarkson, Junior Fa, Eric Murray, Greg Murphy, David Seymour, Liam Messam, Zoi Sadowski-Synott, Ruby Tui, UFC stars Kai Kara-France, Shane Young and Israel Adesanya.
All the celebrities will play alongside the Sky Sport Breakers’ stars in mixed teams, with net proceeds from the game going towards Starship Foundation.
The makeup of both teams will be revealed in a draft on Tuesday, November 10.
Now, a big talking point is whether Wilson will play alongside the iconic Irene van Dyk or match up against her in opposite teams.
Motorsport great Greg Murphy trained alongside the Breakers this week and is not surprised so many of New Zealand’s sports stars have signed up to play.
“It’s for a great cause, and these ideas are just awesome for New Zealand as a whole,” he said.
“We need a bit of entertainment; we need a few laughs, and the more of this kind of thing, the better.
“I think that’s going to be huge for New Zealand to sit back and enjoy at the stadium or watch on Sky and enjoy a bit of laughter.”
Murphy, who famously has won the Bathurst 100 four-times, admits he will be out of his comfort zone when he walks on court at Spark Arena.
“There are plenty of players who have a lot more skills than me, and I’m hoping I’m subbed on and off the bench very quickly,” jokes Murphy.
“I’m not nervous about my performance as a whole, just nervous that I’m going to look like an absolute twit, and that’s probably on the cards.”
