The BNZ Breakers have dropped their first home game of the NBL25 season after being defeated 88-62 by S.E Melbourne Phoenix in Christchurch.
The hosts came into the match short-handed with co-captain Mitch McCarron, Mojave King, Dane Pineau and the in-form Max Darling all ruled out through injury.
Despite their best efforts, the Breakers found it difficult to generate consistent offence, outplayed by the Phoenix who capitalised on their opportunities and dominated the boards.
Parker Jackson-Cartwright was the standout performer for the Breakers, finishing with 19 points and six assists. He shot 53% from the field, impressing with his drives and mid-range game. However, he struggled to carry the team with limited scoring support.
The visitors were led by Matt Hurt, who poured in 19 points and seven rebounds. His ability to finish inside and out posed problems all night for the Breakers’ defence. Angus Glover was equally effective off the bench, contributing 13 points on an impressive 71% shooting.
Head coach Petteri Koponen said it was a disappointing performance which saw them struggle to generate any flow.
“It’s unfortunate [to have four players out] but we have to have that next guy mentality. Today wasn’t our day, we weren’t sharp from the first quarter,” he said.
“We didn’t shoot the ball well and couldn’t get stops. We have to analyse the game and figure out what we can do better.
“We now focus on getting ready for the Sydney Kings. They are one of the best teams in the league and it’s going to be a huge challenge for us.”
The BNZ Breakers (3-2) now look to regroup as they travel across the Tasman to go up against Sydney Kings on Sunday at 4.30pm (NZT).
