This morning, the Sky Sport Breakers unveiled their new jersey and colours for the NBL21 season. Designed in collaboration with Awataha Marae, the jersey features a one-of-a-kind Maori design for the team to wear with pride during what promises to be a unique season.
Anthony Wilson, Managing Director of Awataha, explained how the jersey’s design relates to each aspect of the Breakers values:
Unity
The Maori designs are derived from the kowhaiwhai patterns found in our Maori meeting houses. They remind us that our Mana is divine handed down to us by our creator, all mankind shares this common bond; it unites us as one.
Persistence
The puhoro design represents speed and agility. Usually worn on the legs of the warriors, the design embodies the “fast break” ethos of the Sky Sport Breakers.
Integrity and excellence
The new design is founded on the rich history and success of the club. It is not just a playing jersey. When players put the jersey on, it calls on the Mana of the club; past players, owners, and fans to join them as they take to the court in battle. It is this integrity and commitment, that allows the Breakers to exude a staunch persistence, an attitude to win at all costs, whilst operating at the highest levels of excellence.
This morning at dawn, the Sky Sport Breakers team, office staff, and members of the Awataha Marae gathered at the Sky Sport Breakers training facility for a jersey blessing - a ritual honoured every year to mark the start of the season.
The NBL21 jersey was produced by the NBL’s new apparel partner, Champion, who join the NBL after a hiatus from basketball since their production of the NBA on-court jerseys during the 1990s and into the 2000s.
Our official on-court Jersey is now available from the NBL store - www.nblstore.com.au.
