Breakers Focus on "Continuing Trajectory"

New Zealand Breakers head coach Mody Maor has put NBL23 behind him, and stated that “every season stands on its own” as the club begins to ramp up its preparations for its upcoming campaign.

The Breakers were undoubtedly the surprise packets of the NBL in Maor’s opening campaign at the helm, and came within a quarter of basketball of becoming just the second team in competition history to win the title the season after finishing bottom of the ladder.

“The thing we are looking forward to the most is continuing the trajectory,” says Maor.  

“Every season stands on its own, it’s its own chapter but the good clubs – the one with the real culture – there’s a thread that continues from season to season.

“This is what we tried to discover at the beginning of last year and we were successful with big parts of it. Now it’s about fostering that, growing that and seeing it become more entrenched in how we do things, who we are, and every aspect of the club.”

With just six players currently committed to the side for NBL24, New Zealand, along with the Cairns Taipans currently has the least complete roster heading into next season of the competition.

The re-signing of star point guard Will McDowell-White was seen as the major key to any off-season movement within the club, and since the Breakers successfully committed the NBL Most Improved Player nominee to a new deal Maor says the time to build the side is now.

“We had a few key players that we wanted to retain and we’re happy we were able to retain most of them, and ever since then we’ve been beating the pavement trying to find the right pieces to the puzzle to allow us to compete again,” he said.

“Now is the time to build the team – especially the local core. We have a few open spots that we need to fill.

“We’ve had the privilege of hitting the off-season late, competing in the Championship Series, which put us in a situation where we needed to hit the ground running.

“Once that’s in place and we’re happy with the roster we have and the team we have, or at least the first stages of it, then there’ll be time for a bit of a break to recharge, recalibrate, whatever you want to call it.”

The Breakers will open their NBL24 campaign against the Taipans on Saturday, September 30.
