The BNZ Breakers have reinforced their depth ahead of the NBL27 campaign, signing high-energy Kiwi Tobias Cameron as a Training Player.
The 6’5” (196 cm) guard / swingman has an established reputation as one of the most tenacious, physical perimeter defenders in New Zealand basketball. Tobias has a relentless work ethic and elite defensive versatility forged during a five-year NCAA Division I career at Abilene Christian University and international appearances for the Tall Blacks.
Cameron’s recruitment follows an impressive run across recent NZNBL seasons with the Taranaki Airs, Franklin Bulls, and the 2027 NZNBL Champion Southland Sharks.
Known throughout the domestic league as a high-IQ "glue guy," Cameron consistently makes his mark guarding the opposition's primary scoring threats, crashing the glass, and delivering game-changing hustle plays that extend far beyond the stat sheet, superbly highlighted in his performance for the Sharks in their Grand Final win over the Saints last weekend.
Cameron is determined to take the opportunity with both hands and go to the next level.
“I couldn’t be more excited and grateful for the opportunity, especially in Aotearoa. Coming off a season in the UK and winning the NZNBL I feel prepared to bring what I can to the table every day in training and to be a part of the BNZ Breaker culture.
“It means everything to me to take the next step; my goal is to be the best version of myself and to stay ready when called upon. I’m looking forward to a fun season with the boys.”
As a 'Training Player', Cameron will provide relentless daily competition during practices. While a non-rostered athlete, he will practice and scrimmage full-time with the squad during daily sessions. He will develop his game and learn team concepts without taking up an official game-day spot.
If the need arises, he offers the BNZ Breakers a reliable, battle-tested option capable of stepping straight onto the active NBL roster. That potentially seamless transition brings huge upside to the club, with President of Basketball Dillon Boucher delighted to secure Cameron’s services.
"Tobias is a relentless competitor who embodies the grit and physical standard we want in our building every single day,” said Boucher. “He has proven his defensive toughness at every level, from NCAA tournament play to his impactful NZNBL campaigns. Having someone of Tobias’s pedigree, basketball IQ, and character in our environment as a Training Player and potential Nominated Replacement Player gives us incredible depth and flexibility heading into NBL27."
Cameron will join the BNZ Breakers in pre-season on return from the NZ Select tour to China, adding another piece of a deeply competitive, physical squad ready to go to work under Head Coach Gordon Herbert for NBL27.
