NBL Next Star Karim Lopez looked every bit a 2026 first round draft pick in the BNZ Breakers' Round 6 win over Sydney Kings.
The 17-year-old became just the fourth Next Star to record at least 10 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks in a game, joining NBA players Ariel Hukporti, Alex Sarr and Bobi Klintman in illustrious company.
“Karim was really huge for us ... but he already showed that in the first NBA game too,” Breakers coach Petteri Koponen said.
Lopez finished the game with 13 points, 10 rebounds (5 offensive) and 2 blocks in 30-minutes of action at Qudos Bank Arena.
“He did the things we all know what he can do, but most importantly he was present on the court all the time,” Koponen said.
“There was a sense of urgency from him and I’m really happy for him."
Unlike the rest of his Next Stars' class, Lopez is not draft eligible until 2026, which follows the same path as Bullets big man Rocco Zikarsky, by being in a two year plan in the NBL.
“We see the improvement every day ... it’s a marathon you know. There are no magic tricks,” Koponen ended
“It’s all about getting to the gym, watching film, finding areas to improve.
“He’s 17 ... and there are still going to be ups and downs throughout the season, but I have great trust in him.”
